Healthy Care for Dry Summer Hair

Summer is a time to get outside–whether you walk, run, hike, bike, kayak, swim, paddle board, play tennis, garden, or go to baseball games. Whatever you choose, all of these are great activities that get you outside and (I hope!) away from these ubiquitous phones, tablets, and televisions! Go out and play! Get some sunshine and vitamin D. It’s good for you! But it’s not good for those locks. Sun damages hair as much as it does skin, especially color-treated hair.

Some hair care products offer protection, but it really pays to wear a hat–and there are lots of cool and cute hats out there–when you’re outside for an extended time. Try a wide-brimmed hat for gardening, a baseball hat for hiking or cheering on your favorite team, or a sassy fedora for a barbecue on the deck with friends. Protect that lovely head of hair, whether it’s long or short, from the sun’s damaging rays.

So your hair is dry and damaged anyway? For a great deep conditioner, use about 2 tablespoons of coconut oil or olive oil, add a few drops of rosemary essential oil to stimulate the scalp, and massage it into your hair and scalp. This is a great one to leave in as long as you can. Do this while you clean house or do laundry, or if you can, put on a shower cap or wrap your hair in cellophane wrap and sleep in it. I know…not the most comfortable way to sleep! But it will soften and moisturize damaged hair. Shampoo it out, and you won’t likely need conditioner afterwards. This is especially good after hair is exposed to chlorine or salt water.

We love summer and all it brings. Sports, outdoor parties, and lots of  activity! Take care of your hair, and it will be your crowning glory!
